Hola

Drum Dial Settings
This thread is intended to be a respository of drum tension-o-meter settngs. Obviously, everyone has the sounds they like best out of their drums, but this could help others explore tuning their drums.
The experimental aspect is to see if certain heads sound best at certain tunings. For example do most people like Pinstripes at 70, while Clear G2s are prefered at 78? Maybe it doesn't matter, who knows.
To make usefull the posts should contain what device was used (ie., Drum Dial), what heads used, reso or batter head, drum depth and diameter, drum material, dial settings, and a description of the sound.

in general it's all a very high tuning. (the highest I've ever tuned my drums)
the snare is crisp and bright, with a very firm playing surface
the 12" is open and clear, the 14" has some overtones
it all sounds great playing the "Shortnin' Bread" solo
12"x8" Batter 81, Reso 81
B=Remo Coated Ambassador, R=Evans Coated G1
14"x14" Batter 75, Reso 81
B=Remo Coated Ambassador, R=Evans Coated G1
14"x5" Batter 90, Reso 75
B=Evans HD Dry, R=Evans 300
18"x14" ?? a little higher than JAW (not dialed)
B=Evans EQ1, R=Evans Coated EQ1 no hole
I need to do some adjustments on the Floor Tom, and try to dial in the BD. I'll post an update when I do.
*************
bass drum reso - single ply - 35 on a Tama tw
bass drum batter - single ply with damping ring - 32 on tw
I like 55 - 60 on Pinstripe batters
on snare batter, evans genera dry - 78
*************
on my shite 30 year old fiberglass Pearls, pinstripes around 55, res ambassadors at 50ish.
*************
8, 10, 12, 14 toms drum dial = 70
great thud, nice and resonant
14 x 5 snare tuned pretty darned tight - haven't taken the meter to it yet

75 batter, 73 reso
14x12 tom
Evans EC2 on batter, stock reso

16x14 floor tom
Evans EC2 on batter, stock reso
75 batter, 74 reso
22x18 kick
Evans EMAD batter on batter, Evans EMAD reso on reso
74 batter, 64 reso
Note that the EMAD batter cannot be accurately measured at the same ¾” in from the shell as on other heads. The DrumDial was used with no spacer bracket up against the inner ring with no foam ring installed. Various photos were also taken during the process.
What the kit sounds like when I'm having a bad night
I'm still playing around with tunings. I tuned it up from my previous settings of 71 on all tom batters and 68-69 on all tom reso's. Still not perfect but it's getting there.
*************
80 was the magic number for clear ambassador resonant heads on my most recent session
**************
Tonight I put all the toms at 73...Evans EC2 Coated batter, Evans Resonant. Sounds freaking fantastic - though, I went around afterwards and evened them up by ear.
I tuned the snare batter (evans genera dry, not the HD version) to 88, and the snare side (Evans snare 300) to 81
My kit finally sounds cohesive!
I need to record the kit - lol!

OK, here's tuning round 2 for the 'ole Gretsch Catalina Clubs.
In post#1, they were up very high for a nice open ringy jazzy tone. I had a surf band gig, so I wanted to bring them down a bit. They had to get lower in pitch, and have a better feel for really laying into them, but i didn't want to lose that open tone.
I decided to just tune by ear to get them to a pitch and feel that was more appropriate. So, I just started to evenly bring them down, then applied pressure to ensure they would not 'jump' down when played. This was also a good time to get the floor tom cleaned up. It had some overtones I didn't really like. I got the tone I wanted in just a few spins of the 'ole key.
While playing, I had a little rebound issue, when I got lazy with buring the beater into the head (no hole in the reso), so I dropped down a couple of the batter rods. It worked OK, but if I were kicking that drum like that all the time, I'd get a reso with a hole.
The interesting thing is that the 12" went from 81 to apx. 75, the variation in the lugs was slight, except for one of the lugs on the "RIMS" support. That was a little higher apx 77).
The FT went from 75 to 74 on the top, with very slight variation. Along with a drop in the reso from 81 to 77.
The snare started to creep out of tune, and I put to where I thought it sounded good, and most of the lugs were back to 90!
The kit as a whole has a high pitched, open toned blues\early-rock sound. It reminds me of a 60's pop-song tone.
here are the new numbers
12"x8" Batter 75, Reso 81
B=Remo Coated Ambassador, R=Evans Coated G1
14"x14" Batter 74, Reso 77
B=Remo Coated Ambassador, R=Evans Coated G1
14"x5" Batter 90, Reso 75
B=Evans HD Dry, R=Evans 300
18"x14" ?? a little higher than JAW (not dialed)
B=Evans EQ1, R=Evans Coated EQ1 no hole
